a quick sketch of an update post

There were thunderstorms going flickaflick kaBOOMba in the Twin Cities much of the night, so I am awake. Now that doesn't mean awake enough to make a proper post on how things are, but here's the basic stuff:

On May 10, I unexpectedly surfed down a collapsing retaining wall which then yeeted me headfirst into the side of the house. I got a concussion and a double-fractured ankle. And now I'm recuperating.

It was a short retaining wall, which is a great piece of luck, because things could have been so much worse. Even at the height of a couple of feet or so, like it was. There were a lot of important bits of good luck. Those stories are for later, though. For now, I'm just waving at everybody here and saying hi, I'm still here! Some of you have heard already, and have been kind and have helped get me to the ER, the ortho team, the imaging people, and all the rest, and there are not enough words to express this gratitude, but THANK YOU SO MUCH.

And now, probably sleep time. Again. It's remarkable how much sleep a person can need when recuperating from fractures or concussions, or both.

(And I hope you are having a much more pleasantly calm spring/summer yourself!)

Starting today: Summer of the 69 is an old-fashioned panfandom fest that runs from June 9th through September 6th, to hit 6/9 in both common date formats. It's dedicated to creations featuring the sexual position in question, though it doesn't have to be the first, last, or only sexual position featured in a given work.

Contributions are open to all sorts of non-gen-AI works and content, from recs to fics to art to crafts to podfic to vids to just about anything legal you can think of, and are open to all fandoms and original works. The fest features themes introduced weekly that themselves typically run for two weeks, to give participants some inspiration to work off of. There's also a comment meme in the style of old-fashioned kink memes, where you can prompt scenarios to your heart's content!

To learn more, go to [community profile] summerofthe69; you can also check out this year's theme calendar right here, add prompts to the comment meme over here, and browse the AO3 collections for this and past years over here.

Come check it out!

plans for the June '26 work party

This morning my gig shift was cancelled, so I called Mike and we had a very productive conversation about the coming work party. It's going to be a party of 2, unless Sam decides to come out for the day.

Things that need to be done, but not all of this will get done in June:

- put in the new ignition switch in the backhoe

- Cut down the trees that are to the west of the half-round. They're too close and might come down on top of it during a storm.

- Dig out the cistern site. This may also include cutting down some trees

- dig the trench for the French drain

- site the cabin

Mike thinks that we can fix the backhoe, cut down trees, and maybe dig out the cistern

We're planning on using earth bags for the walls of the cistern. I can order those on Friday - about $100 for 100 bags with shipping and tax.

Planning the French Drain

Planning, first, for the half-round. I'm thinking that I'll only run it on three sides. I dunno if the backhoe would damage the pipe, rolling in and out of the shelter.

"For best results you need to use these steps. Dig a 14” wide trench and line the trench with the 8 oz. commercial filter fabric. Then put 3 inches of rock at the bottom of the trench. Place the 4” perforated corrugated pipe (without a sock on the pipe) on top of the rock. Next fill in around the pipe with stone on all sides and wrap the filter fabric on top. Now it is fully contained to not allow sediment or solids to contaminate the French drain compromising its performance." French Drain Man

To run along three sides of the half-round, I'll need about 90 feet of trench, 14" wide and averaging 36" deep- it needs to slant down to the cistern. Edit: it does not need to be so deep; two feet will do.

90*12*14*36=544,320" Mike says two feet will be deep enough, so that's 90*12*14*24=362,880 cubic inches, or 7.75 cubic yards, so about $400-$600

544,320/46660= 11.7 cubic yards of crushed #57 rock. I've contacted a gravel company and I expect that this'll cost about $800 - $1000

The filter fabric is about $500 for 10' wide by 100' long $300 for 6'x 100'
Non-Woven Geotextile Filter Fabric 8 oz - Landscape Fabric - Sandbaggy

The PVC pipe is going to be around $100

The earth bags for the cistern will be about $100 - not sure about the liner but that's going to be the most expensive part, I think.

My GoFundMe has stalled at about $1200 short of what I need. So Im going to donate to myself, $50/wk I'm hoping. That'll get me there in 6 months, which'll be good enough!

[community profile] birdfeeding is a community started on January 1, 2023. It's all about birdfeeding, birdwatching, and other topics relating to birds. It also touches on nature in general, and observations that may effect bird activity such as local weather. Both text and image posts are welcome. Now is a great time to join as hungry birds are easy to attract with a feeder.

Community resources include posts about birding events, nurseries that sell seeds or plants attractive to birds, bird identification apps, the benefits of birdwatching, and other useful materials. Check out the anchor posts from Three Weeks for Dreamwidth.

Quick note that post-by-email and comment-by-email is (sometimes?) failing silently without actually posting right now! I'm pretty sure this is related to last night's shenanigans and will be fixed once Mark can finish the full fix for it, which he's working on, but if you've posted or replied by email in the last 24 hours, fish it out of your sent folder to check if it posted!

EDIT: This should be fixed as of around 7AM EDT! We *believe* everything that was stuck in the plumbing has been sent along to your journal or the comment thread it was meant for; it's definitely not where it was stuck anymore, at least.

Robby has managed to put in a temporary fix for the site errors and things failing to refresh or not showing up where they should! The permanent fix is going to need Mark's experience, and unfortunately -- seriously, this literally never fails -- Mark has been on an international flight all day, because of course he has. (Never. Fails. He and I are not allowed to both take vacation at once.)

The site will work just fine with the temporary fix in place, things just might be a little slow here and there. We'll keep you updated.

We're aware of site traffic issues and are working to fix them for the people who are having problems! (The tactics the damn bot traffic uses are endlessly shifting, and they're really good at looking like real traffic, sigh.)
